What are the details so far.. about Ridley Scott's Prometheus (2012) Film

What are the details so far.. about Ridley Scott's Prometheus (2012) Film

March 27, 2012

Summary
Prometheus is a new Sci-fi film from director Ridley Scott, scripted by Lost co-creator Damon Lindelof, based on a story idea from Scott and an earlier script by Jon Spaihts. That earlier script WAS for the originally planned Alien prequel, but it appears that Lindelof and Scott have come up with something more stand-alone, though that’s not to say that there is no longer any connection to the original franchise.
Who’s in it?
So far, original Swedish Dragon Tattoo star Noomi Rapace has been confirmed as the leading lady, and will play a character called Elizabeth Shaw.  Charlize Theron to play Vickers.  Michael Fassbender is widely reported to be playing an android character (see below)
Story and Characters
The storyline is currently under wraps, but some alleged character profiles were leaked late last year:
  • Elizabeth Shaw – a scientist to be played by Noomi Rapace
  • Vickers – a female supporting character, is a tough, 40-something crew member. Charlize Theron has been selected for this role.
  • David – an android crew member, and apparently the role that Michael Fassbender will be playing. It’s unknown yet whether he will be a bad guy, like Alien’s Ash, or good guy, like the sequel’s Bishop
  • Engineer One – this is a rumours character from the days when the film was an Alien prequel. Could this have been from the same species as what is commonly refered to as ‘The Space Jockey’ that was found in the derelict space ship in Alien? No the film has moved on from that storyline, will we still see the character? Perhaps when Scott mentioned that we would still see some ‘Alien DNA’, this is the link he was refering to?
  • The businessman – perhaps linked to the Weyland-Yutani ‘company’ that has lurked in the background of all the Alien movies, including the AvP duo. Don’t forget, it was the company that sent the crew of the Nostromo down to the surface of LV-426 in the first film, knowing full well what was down there. Perhaps this character’s story arc will be to lay the ground work of the plan to create a new bioweapon. Again, now the story is stand-alone, rather than an Alien prequel, this element and character may be dropped – on this other hand, this may be another bit of the ‘Alien DNA’  we may be seeing
When’s it out?
The film originally had a very tight scheule, with a US release date of March 2012. This has now wisely been moved back to June 8th 2012.

Report from the set: Ridley Scott's Prometheus, the movie - Pinewood Studios

Report from the set: Ridley Scott's Prometheus, the movie - Pinewood Studios
March 26, 2011

First report form Pinewood Studios, Prometheus News:

Prometheus, the movie, is be released: June 8, 2012.  Prometheus is currently in Production.

First report form Pinewood Studios.
A screen writing student in Canada was lucky enough to visit the Pinewood Studios in Toronto and shared his experience on the IMDB boards. Part of Prometheus is currently being filmed at the 250.000 sq ft studios, in addition to the original Pinewood Studios in London.

Although he didn't actually get to see any of the sets for himself, he did manage to talk to someone who has. And once again Prometheus is being referred to as something huge.
I met one of the guards or officials and talked to him for around twenty minutes. This is the only film being shot and its bigger than anything he's seen. Pinewood had been the locale for many major films like Resident Evil(whatever the latest version was), Incredible Hulk, Cinderrela Man, X-Men(second one) and this, he says, dwarfs them all.
He told me that there is a set piece which is 3 blocks high and one of the most "alien" things he has ever seen. The highlight was when he said they had build two massive spaceships or some futuristic vehicle which was very un-futuristic.
I was confused but realized what he meant was the spaceships would probably be very un-glossy.

Latest Prometheus News =
Actors Rafe Spall (son of Brit acting legend Timothy Spall) and Logan Marshall-Green have both recently joined the cast of Ridley Scott’s not-an-Alien-prequel, Prometheus.
Spall will be familiar to viewers from appearances in films like Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, and UK TV shows like A Room With A View and Pete Vs Life. Meanwhile Marshall-Green has appearances in films including Devil and TV show 24 to his credit.
As well as filming in the UK, to film will also spend some time at Pinewood’s Canadian studios and carry on throughout the summer.
Prometheus is directed by Ridley Scott, from a screenplay by Damon Lindelof, based on an earlier, abandoned Alien prequel script by Jon Spaihts. The film also stars Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, Sean Harris and Kate Dickie, and is due for release on June 8th 2012.

RIdley Scott, the Director. New Movie, Prometheus, 2012

Ridley Scott, the Director. New Movie, Prometheus, 2012

Sir Ridley Scott (born 30 November 1937) is an English film director and producer. His films include The Duellists (1977), Alien (1979), Blade Runner (1982), Legend (1985), Thelma & Louise (1991), Gladiator (2000), Black Hawk Down (2001), Hannibal (2001), Kingdom of Heaven (2005), American Gangster (2007), Body of Lies (2008), and Robin Hood (2010).

Ridley Scott is currently Directing, Prometheus (2012)

Scott is to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2011.  He is the older brother of film director Tony Scott.

What do we know about the movie Prometheus?

Around the release of Alien Resurrection Joss Whedon wrote an Earth-set script for Alien 5, which Sigourney Weaver disliked. Before 20th Century Fox greenlit Alien vs. Predator, James Cameron had been working on a story for a fifth Alien film. Alien director Ridley Scott had talked with Cameron and stated that he thought "it would be a lot of fun, but the most important thing [was] to get the story right." In a 2002 interview, Scott's concept for a story was "to go back to where the alien creatures were first found and explain how they were created", however he at first had not shown interest in pursuing the project. On learning that Fox intended to pursue Alien vs. Predator, Cameron believed the film would "kill the validity of the franchise" and ceased work on his story, because to him "it was Frankenstein Meets Werewolf. It was Universal just taking their assets and starting to play them off against each other. […] Milking it." On December 5, 2008, Sigourney Weaver hinted in an interview with MTV that she and Ridley Scott were working on an Alien spinoff film which would focus on the chronicles of Ellen Ripley rather than on the Aliens.

Prometheus

Former commercial director Carl Rinsch had originally signed on in May 2009 to direct a prequel film to Alien. Ridley Scott and Tony Scott had decided to function only as producers, with filming to begin in 2009; however, Fox was hesitant about making the film without Ridley Scott's direction. In July 2009 it was confirmed that Ridley Scott would be returning to direct the Alien prequel. In June 2010 Scott stated during a Q&A that the story will be developed and produced as two separate prequel films, and that the project was being prepped. In October 2010, it was reported the production had been put on indefinite hold. It was said Scott wanted a $250 million budget along with an R rating, but 20th Century Fox was reluctant to invest so much money in a film that is not PG-13. On November 10, 2010, a tweet by Henry South, a visual FX designer working on the Alien prequel, indicated the film had gone into production. It has been reported that Natalie Portman and Noomi Rapace are on the shortlist to star in the film, with Rapace as Scott's favorite, while the studio prefers Portman. Some reports have said that films' release would be delayed until 2013 or 2014. However, more recent reports indicate that the first film will be released on June 8, 2012. Production is slated to begin in March 2011, and the film will reportedly have an R rating, and it will be released only in the 3D format. It was also reported that Michael Fassbender was being sought for a role as an android named "David", while Michelle Yeoh has been tapped for a role as Vickers, "a fortysomething, tough-but-sexy woman", as well as a character referred to only as "Engineer 1" who will be portrayed by a 6'5" actor in entirely CGI. Noomi Rapace is still Scott's choice for the main female lead, "Elizabeth Shaw." However, these title and casting claims were later refuted, and Scott confirmed that only the first film was in development at this time.
The first drafts of the screenplays were written by newcomer screenwriter Jon Spaihts, and Damon Lindelof is rewriting at least the script of the first prequel. Ridley Scott stated that the story will take place in 2085, approximately three decades prior to the events of the first Alien film, before the birth of Ellen Ripley. The story, which originally went through several drafts, features a female lead character and will present a "technologically feasible" view on the early stages of "near faster-than light" travel. It will also focus on terraforming and Weyland Industries before its merger with the Yutani Corporation. The films will explore the nature and origin of the unknown extraterrestrial race, who only had a brief appearance in the first Alien as the derelict spaceship's pilot. Scott stated that the films would be about "gods and […] engineers of space" and hinted at the possibility that the Xenomorph Alien was designed either as a biological weapon or as a means to "clean up" planets. Scott also announced that the original Zeta II Reticuli planetary system will be part of the prequel story.
Roger Christian, art director on the first Alien, speculated that the films will be shot in 3-D, which was eventually confirmed by Ridley Scott. Since 3-D films need high lighting levels on set, the hallmark atmosphere of the Alien films with darkness and shadows will be added in post-production through grading processes, while the 3-D equipment will be based on post-Avatar technology. Production design has commenced, and Arthur Max is heading a small Pinewood Studios art department, whose task is to deconstruct the first Alien and reverse-design the prequels from the original art and visuals. The Alien itself will be reenvisioned as a progenitor of the received form of the Xenomorph, and Scott reported that he had planned to contact H. R. Giger for possible artistic collaboration. Despite rumors that the movie would be released under the title of "Paradise", these rumors was later debunked by 20th Century Fox & Devin Faraci, formerly of CHUD.com.
On January 14, 2011, an interview with Scott referred to the film as having evolved into its own 'grand mythology and universe', and had been renamed Prometheus, with a release date of March 9, 2012 with Noomi Rapace starring as one of five main characters in the film. Scott acknowledged the film's roots in the original film, noting it as being a 'jumping-off point', leaving the film's function as a film set in the Alien universe or an entirely stand-alone film ambiguous. On February 11, 2011 it was reported that Charlize Theron was cast in the film.
Speaking to MTV on February 12, 2011, Fassbender stated the film was still an Alien prequel, saying, "Prometheus is absolutely connected to Alien... There's a definite connecting vein."

Prometheus Movie News: Ridley Scott's Prometheus Alien Movie begins shooting, Pinewood Studios #Prometheus

Movie News: Ridley Scott's Prometheus Alien Movie begins shooting, Pinewood Studios #Prometheus

March 24, 2011

Shooting officially began this week on Ridley Scott's Prometheus. You had to look no further than Facebook or Twitter - of course - to confirm that.

Aaron Parrott informed his Facebook followers that he was "at Pinewood Studios on the new Alien set." Parrott works in visual effects. And actress Kathryn Camsey took to Twitter for: "How exciting...am on the aliens set in pinewood studios..."

As Alien Prequel News takes note, it's interesting to see they're all calling it an Alien film even though Scott hasn't come straight out and connected the dots for everyone. He's simply said, ""While 'Alien' was indeed the jumping off point for this project, out of the creative process evolved a new, grand mythology and universe in which this original story takes place.

Principal photography officially began Monday, although it was reported some shooting took place up in Canada.

Prometheus, the movie, Directed by Ridley Scott.
Release Date:  June 8, 2012

How does Ridley Scott’s Prometheus fit into universe of the Alien films?
Quite simply: it has the Alien aliens in it. The catch, though, is that you might not recognise them – at least, not at first.
Remember how the alien took on canine qualities after gestating in a dog? You may even suppose that the first film’s alien was so recognisably humanoid because it had grown in a human. The same applies here: generation by generation, the creature mutates. As Prometheus begins, the xenomorph is not too recognisable. Sure, it has that alien DNA that Scott and Fassbender teasingly referred to, but it’s missing… well, it’s missing human DNA. Or dog DNA.
All you have to do is imagine how it might look if it were to mix DNA with another alien species… and I think we’re starting to work it all out.
I learned that the film’s setting is, in part, a planet that has been terraformed to create the perfect environment in which a particular bioweapon would prosper. Terraformed deliberately to farm the weapon? I got no clear answer. Is this bioweapon the alien? I got no clear answer. While there was a lot of wheezing and coughing on my end of the phone, there was a good deal of quiet smirking on the other, it seems.
I did ask if the film is really going to be called Prometheus. The answer? “Maybe not. Though they are calling it that for a reason.”
Sadly, I was not able to confirm the rumoured use of an 8-foot animatronic Space Jockey, but the way I was told “there’s nothing we’re calling a space jockey here” just led me to believe, perhaps erroneously, that it would be the same character, or at least species, but with a new name. On past information, that name would seem to be “The Engineer”, but I may be getting ahead of myself to join those particular dots so readily when their sources aren’t the same.
Anyway. The only thing I’m completely sure of here is that Prometheus does indeed take place in the same universe as Alien, and in this universe there’s a big terraforming operation going on, somehow related to the classic Giger xenomorph.

Originally 'Alien' Prequel.. now 'Prometheus', the movie, directed by Ridley Scott

Originally 'Alien' Prequel.. now 'Prometheus', the movie, directed by Ridley Scott

Movie Release Date: June 8, 2012

Original Information:
There's a movie prequel to the Alien franchise ahead of us! Director Ridley Scott, who directed the first Alien movie, is working on a story of the origins of Alien. The story would actually be split into two movies. Director Ridley Scott revealed his plan a few months ago:

“As we speak, I’ve got a pile of pages next to me; it’s like the fourth draft. It’s a work in progress, but we’re not dreaming it up anymore. We know what the story is…It’s set in 2085, about 30 years before Sigourney [Weaver's character Ellen Ripley]. It’s fundamentally about going out to find out ‘Who the hell was that Space Jockey?’ The guy who was sitting in the chair in the alien vehicle — there was a giant fellow sitting in a seat on what looked to be either a piece of technology or an astronomer’s chair … Our man [Tom Skerritt as Captain Dallas] climbs up and says “There’s been an explosion in his chest from the inside out — what was that?” I’m basically explaining who that Space Jockey — we call him the Space Jockey — I’m explaining who the space jockeys were … [The film] is about the discussion of terraforming — taking planets and planetoids and balls of earth and trying to terraform, seed them with the possibilities of future life.
Director Ridley Scott

And he recently confirmed the premise to The Independent:

"The film will be really tough, really nasty. It’s the dark side of the moon. We are talking about gods and engineers. Engineers of space. And were the aliens designed as a form of biological warfare? Or biology that would go in and clean up a planet?"
Director Ridley Scott

From what I heard the Alien prequels will be shot in 3D.
Ridley Scott

Things are currently moving forward with the upcoming Alien prequels: Ridley Scott has been meeting with Actress Gemma Arterton for a starring role.

Updated Information:
There's a change of plan for the Alien prequel. The project is repackaged as a new movie that could well develop into its own franchise. The film is now titled Prometheus. A few words from Director Ridley Scott about this change:

"While Alien was indeed the jumping off point for this project, out of the creative process evolved a new, grand mythology and universe in which this original story takes place. The keen fan will recognize strands of Alien's DNA, so to speak, but the ideas tackled in this film are unique, large and provocative. I couldn't be more pleased to have found the singular tale I'd been searching for, and finally return to this genre that’s so close to my heart."
Director Ridley Scott

Logan Marshall-Green, Michael Fassbender, Noomi Rapace are now part of the cast of Prometheus.

'Prometheus' links to Alien, Idris Elba working with Ridley Scott

'Prometheus' links to Alien, Idris Elba working with Ridley Scott
March 17, 2011

Idris Elba, star from Thor, confirms his role in Prometheus, talks about working with Director Ridley Scott, and addresses the movies links to 1978's Alien

Check out this Interview, with Digital Spy, the actor who starred in Comic Book adaptation The Losers last year, and will play Heimdall in Thor next month, confirmed that he'll will be in Prometheus.  Idris Elba also discussed working with Ridley Scott and the movies relationship with the Alien franchise.

"I really can't say too much about Prometheus, but yes, I am in it. I literally am in preparation for it now as we speak. I'm a huge Ridley Scott fan, this is my second time working with him. He's a majestic filmaker. He's like royalty. He attracts the best people to work with him. Actors as well as film crews. It's a joy to work with him. I'll be there all summer working on Prometheus out at Pinewood."

"I mean, you know, if you've read any interviews with what Ridley says, he says you can't ignore the fact he made a mastermind in 1976. A mastermind. Prometheus is in some ways connected to that, yes of course. Is it in storyline? I'm not at liberty to say. I will tell you that if you can imagine a young Ridley Scott making a film like Alien in 1975, released in 1978, and just imagine what he can do now."
Prometheus, the movie, is set to be released on June 8th, 2012.
